Bible verses about fear

The Bible says "do not be afraid" more often than most people expect, usually to someone who has good reason to be scared. These verses are grouped by what you are facing: a frightening moment, real danger, an uncertain future, death, or a fear that has gotten bigger than it should be. If your worry is more of a constant hum than a specific threat, the anxiety page may fit better.

"Do not be afraid": what God says to frightened people

These commands are spoken to real people in real trouble. Abram hears his in a vision, not long after a dangerous military campaign. Exiled Israel hears Isaiah's, and the reason given is not "things will be fine" but "I have called you by name." The disciples hear Matthew 14:27 in the middle of a storm. And John, face down on Patmos, hears it from the risen Jesus. Each time, the comfort is a Person, not a plan.

After these events, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.

Genesis 15:1

But now, this is what the LORD says — He who created you, O Jacob, and He who formed you, O Israel: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are Mine!

Isaiah 43:1

But Jesus spoke up at once: Take courage! It is I. Do not be afraid.

Matthew 14:27

When I saw Him, I fell at His feet like a dead man. But He placed His right hand on me and said, Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last, the Living One. I was dead, and behold, now I am alive forever and ever! And I hold the keys of Death and of Hades.

Revelation 1:17-18

When you feel in danger

Several of these were written by people under real threat. Psalm 3 is headed as David's song when he fled from his own son Absalom, and he still says he will not fear. In 2 Kings 6, Elisha's servant wakes to find an enemy army around the city; Elisha prays and the servant is shown what he could not see. None of these verses promise nothing bad will happen. They say you are not facing it alone.

The LORD is on my side; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?

Psalms 118:6

I will not fear the myriads set against me on every side.

Psalms 3:6

Do not fear sudden danger or the ruin that overtakes the wicked, for the LORD will be your confidence and will keep your foot from the snare.

Proverbs 3:25-26

Do not be afraid, Elisha answered, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.

2 Kings 6:16

When the future feels unknown

Fear of the future is mostly fear of not being in control. Psalm 31:15 is a short answer to that: my times are in Your hands. Isaiah 46:4 stretches the promise to old age, which is when many people worry most. Jeremiah 17 compares a trusting person to a tree by water that keeps bearing fruit even in a drought. The tree still has dry years. It just has roots that reach water.

My times are in Your hands; deliver me from my enemies and from those who pursue me.

Psalms 31:15

He does not fear bad news; his heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD.

Psalms 112:7

Even to your old age, I will be the same, and I will bear you up when you turn gray. I have made you, and I will carry you; I will sustain you and deliver you.

Isaiah 46:4

But blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in Him. He is like a tree planted by the waters that sends out its roots toward the stream. It does not fear when the heat comes, and its leaves are always green. It does not worry in a year of drought, nor does it cease to produce fruit.

Jeremiah 17:7-8

When you fear death

Fear of death is old, and the New Testament names it directly. The writer of Hebrews says Jesus shared our flesh and blood to free those held in slavery by that fear. Jesus says the words in John 11 to Martha, just before He raises her brother Lazarus. Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 15 and Philippians 1 as someone who has faced prison and danger, and he treats death as defeated, not denied. If you are grieving or ill, read slowly and take only what helps.

Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me will live, even though he dies. And everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?

John 11:25-26

Now since the children have flesh and blood, He too shared in their humanity, so that by His death He might destroy him who holds the power of death, that is, the devil, and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.

Hebrews 2:14-15

Where, O Death, is your victory? Where, O Death, is your sting? The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!

1 Corinthians 15:55-57

For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

Philippians 1:21

Fear that needs reordering

The Bible does not treat all fear as the same. In Matthew 10, Jesus sends out His twelve disciples and tells them not to be ruled by people who can only harm the body. Isaiah 8 says the same to a nation in a panic: do not fear what the crowd fears. Romans 8:15 and 1 John 4:18 go to the root. Fear can make you feel like a slave or like someone facing punishment, and God's love is meant to replace that.

Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Instead, fear the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

Matthew 10:28

Do not call conspiracy everything these people regard as conspiracy. Do not fear what they fear; do not live in dread. The LORD of Hosts is the One you shall regard as holy. Only He should be feared; only He should be dreaded.

Isaiah 8:12-13

For you did not receive a spirit of slavery that returns you to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption to sonship, by whom we cry, Abba! Father!

Romans 8:15

There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear, because fear involves punishment. The one who fears has not been perfected in love.

1 John 4:18

Frequently asked questions

What does the Bible say about fear?

The Bible acknowledges fear as part of life and often answers it with God's presence rather than with a demand to feel brave. "Do not be afraid" is a common phrase in Scripture, usually followed by a reason: God is with you, has called you, or holds the future.

How many times does the Bible say "do not fear"?

There is no single agreed count, because it depends on the translation and which phrases you include, such as "do not be afraid" and "fear not." You will often hear 365, but that figure is a popular saying, not a verified total.

What is the best Bible verse for fear?

Isaiah 41:10 and Psalm 56:3 are among the most often quoted. Beyond those, Genesis 15:1, Matthew 14:27 and 2 Kings 6:16 are good choices when the fear is about something specific and frightening.

Is all fear wrong in the Bible?

No. Scripture praises a reverent respect for God, and Jesus warns against some things worth taking seriously. What it opposes is fear that rules you, makes you act against your faith, or leaves you feeling alone and condemned.
